SENSE - industrial design for a router
I was a part of a team of two creating the industrial design for this router.
This was shipped and for sale for a limited time. Techradar called it ‘stylish’ making me proud ;) Read their review here.
Summary.
Initially we wanted to do a simple prism shape (above) that could stand vertically or lay down horizontally neatly in a bookshelf, but we had to go back to the drawing board due to the manufacturer not being able provide the device enough ventilation to stay cool and silent.
So we shrank the prism, duplicated it and pasted both together giving us the final, distinct lozenge shape that had proper ventilation and fit the PCB nicely and securily (below).
This is the final retail version.
The design & the problem.
We ran series of focus group sessions between each iteration. The first sessions were ran using crude napkin sketches, the second with higher fidelity sketches and the following ones with 3d renders and the last one with 3d printed mock-ups.
A few of the focus groups were ran with female-only participants, as we wanted this to be router that has universal look to it as possible and hearing from our first few sessions that all the current routers look as if they were made for men only.
Here are some sketches and renders of the most outlandish ones from those sessions.
