Cryptographic secure satellite phone
Summary.
This thicc boi was designed so that it hides it’s chunky innards and stamp-sized screen to a somewhat modern design.
I did the concept and industrial design here in a team of two.
Rendering was handled by our 3D specialists.
Fool me once…
As this is a satelite phone, it’s a bit under 4 cm or an inch and a half thick due to the electronics and battery size. We decided to fool the eye and hide chunkiness by tapering edges substantially.
The screen of the device is tiny, so to again fool the eye, the top of the device is designed completely black to hide the shortcomings of the tech.
The waistband houses the crypto call button that encrypts the calls.
This phone has a very niche market and is geared for diplomats and other government personnel who need outmost privacy for their calls.
Inspiration.
I was heavily inspired by Naoto Fukusawa’s classic designs for the iida Infobar line of phones. One of which I am a proud owner of.
Interactions.
Trying to figure out where to put the crypto call button in 2D. We decided to put in the middle and as big as possible, because probably no one will probably use this for normal calls and rather carry a second phone for the not-so-secret calls.
Final design.
We created two colourways for both of the diplomats who got this phone ;)
